Cupping

You may have seen a photo of American swimmer, Michael Phelps looking like a pepperoni pizza (No offense). People who don’t know about cupping must be thinking, how did he turn into a pizza? The truth is, it’s cupping marks on his shoulder and back, not actual pepperoni.

What is cupping? Cupping is one of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment methods. Cupping is a technique that Acupuncture Physicians use cups to bring up metabolic waste build-up from the tissues and muscles to the surface of the skin. Our body’s cells use oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. When the channels and pores are blocked the waste (carbon dioxide) can’t get out. So it leads to physical pain and discomfort from the build-up toxin. With cupping treatment, the waste will be brought out from the tissues and mussels so there will be fresh blood circulated to the cupped areas, which will enrich and nourish the body and eventually ease the pain.

Fire cupping is one of my signature treatments. Our patients find my cupping treatment extremely helpful and very soothing that a lot of them visit the office multiple times a week. I have helped a lot of patients for their migraine, neck, shoulder and back pain. Check out one of many 5 stars reviews that I received (photo below).

With modern lifestyle, we spend a lot of time in front of screens. Poor back posture in front of computer and tv screens or looking down at the phone for a long time can eventually cause chronic shoulder, neck and back pain.

Cupping can

  • Relieve the pain and muscle tension

  • Improve range of motion

  • Relax the body

  • Help with sports injuries

  • Relieve stress by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system

It is effective, safe and scientifically proven treatment methods.

I prefer using fire cupping method, by using glass cups because it is the original ancient form (why not stick with the tradition?) and it’s how I learned from my professors in Beijing, China but silicone cups are commonly used these days. Obviously glass cups and silicone cups do the same job but I can’t appreciate enough how soothing the glass cups can be when it gets perfectly heated by the fire then softly placed on the body. It gently brings warmth to the pain/ discomfort area and relaxes the body immediately.

My cupping methods usually include flash cupping (cups are rapidly place and removed from the body), sliding cupping (slide the cups on the body) with massage oil or lotion or CBD oil depending on patient’s preference, and dry cupping to finish (leave the cups on the body for about 5-8 minutes).

The pepperoni marks goes away within three to seven days.
